Beyond techniques
There are a few simple and extremely effective techniques or processes that have been extremely useful to me but each only takes me so far. Eventually, we have to feel our way forward in unmapped territory without a method, treading the fine line between allowing a process to unfold and steering it.
Richard Bartlett mastered a number of healing modalities before discovering Matrix Energetics and yet, sometimes, he does not know what to do for a client. Instead of applying a technique or intention he waits for clarity on what, if anything, will actually help. This is not easy - clients expect us to do something, to know the answers, to earn our money and not waste their time - but the most effective thing can be to wait for the whatever is needed to be drawn out of us.
This is also one of the best ways to grow our skills …
"…visit a Hopi rattle maker in Arizona. … Someone placed a chair in the middle of the room and people took turns sitting in it, asking for a healing. Headaches, sores, back pains, and so on. In each case I trusted myself to do what came naturally. it is a day I’ll never forget as I discovered the range of my healing powers as they were drawn out by people for whom healing was natural medicine." from Maps to Ecstasy by Gabrielle Roth
How to be breather upon
Inspiration means ‘breathed upon’. We can’t force or manipulate this to happen. All we can do is learn what helps us to cultivate the state in which it is most likely and to hear and honour the smallest inklings when they come.

Needing something to happen or to be doing something gets in the way so it is best to start by dropping all our preconceived ideas.
Receptivity
A key aspect of this is being receptive. Receptivity involves being alert, relaxed and non-grasping. We let sounds, images, ideas etc. come to us rather than trying to find them but, when they come, we nurture them as nature nurtures seeds.
Playfulness helps us relax and be receptive. So does a softer, more diffuse focus.
Discernment
While we are waiting for clarity, many distractions often arise. Many of these are ways to avoid the discomfort of waiting, such as the mind entertaining us with images. If images come, see if they are useful and, if not, let them go.
An even subtler distraction is when we get into egoic patterns. These can take many forms. We may, for example, trust our inner vision or voices so much that our egos make similar things up for us. Or we may simply drift off into an egoic state.
By their fruits shall you know them
It is important that we don’t assume that, because a subtle sense has been useful in the past, it will always be useful or accurate. Rather, we have to keep cross checking and learning from feedback.
This includes the feedback of others. Shamans sometimes have someone standing next to them when they go into trance. If that someone detects any ego in the shaman in trance, they bring the shaman out of trance and s/he re-enters until there is no ego involved.
if we learn to recognise egoic patterns of energy (those that are unnatural looking/feeling) we can help ourselves and each other in this way. We may have all sorts of ideas of what egoic behaviour does and does not look like. Recognising a pattern of energy as being unnatural is a far more reliable guide.
It can also be useful to notice when we have a lot of mental activity and to learn to be in our hearts.
On the other side
There may also come a time when we no longer need our techniques. To quote the old story, once we have crossed the river we no longer need to carry our boat.
