How to experience & use altered states
"I want what she’s having"
It is not necessary to experience an altered state to get positive benefits from Matrix Energetics or other transformation processes, but it can be useful and desired.
Experiencing energy, the ‘Field’, the Chi of ‘Chi Gung’, Prana, or feeling the energy around our own or another’s physical body, is relatively easy. One way is to rub your hands together and then hold them apart, with palms facing. Move them towards each other slowly until you feel a connection.
It is also relatively easy to see energy. If you look at the ends of your fingers in the dark, you may be able to see the energy extending beyond each finger in a long, very thin triangle.
Most of us are also aware of sacred space when it occurs in a room, usually accompanied by a hush. And yet, we want something more different to our normal state, without the use of chemicals or hours of practise.
Beware seduction, cultivate discernment
Such experiences are much more readily available than they were, partly because consciousness is evolving and partly because these experiences are marketable. Marketable, of course, is a double edged sword, especially where altered states are concerned. Be wary of seductive sales techniques and addictive habits. Apart from the obvious advice to leave credit cards at home when exposing oneself to possible sales hypnosis, we also need to be wary of getting addicted to altered states, energy highs and, in our isolating culture, the pleasure of being part of a group.
There is also a danger in believing ‘guidance’, including psychic or intuitive. Just because a message appears to come from ’spirit’ or an altered state, does not mean it is accurate, right for you or useful. Just because a psychic is accurate about the past and present, does not mean s/he is accurate about the future. Just because an energy is strong does not mean it, and everything that accompanies it, is optimal for you.
Beware of creating a self-seduction channel
The need for discernment also applies to our own intuition or guidance. Once we have established a clear source of guidance or knowing, we have also established an easy way to deceive ourselves, a way in which we can present things we have made up to our own conscious minds and have those things believed. This is particularly useful for wishful thinking, spiritual or other fantasy, justifying our prejudices and our defensive and other behaviours. A few steps further down this road and society will need to be protected from such ’spiritual’ people.
Additionally, there are levels of understanding of reality, so while guidance may be accurate on one level, deeper levels may effect what actually plays out. And things are prone to changing, so for best results, we need to keep observing reality as fully and honestly as we can, and to stay flexible. I follow my intuition during sessions with clients and then let it go rather than interpret it or offer it as the basis for possible conscious decisions.
Spiritual or spiritualist?
The term ’spiritual guides’ comes from spiritualism. I personally prefer the term ’spiritual allies’ - beings who want the best for me and may offer a different perspective to me but do not offer me an excuse, as in "my guides told me to".
Clean, safe and effective
When we experience altered states without any other input, it is up to us what we make them about. We could simply chalk up another experience, or we can use it to initiate deep and pervasive change. This happens in Matrix Energetics when people levitate down to the floor, often in blissful states. It also happens in ‘content free’ hypnosis - hypnosis where all suggestions are vague and open to your interpretation. If we want to, we can consciously form our our intent for a session.
The deeper we go, the deeper we go
Some people let go into these states easily. Others, including me, have to do whatever it takes to have the experience so that we know what we are looking for, and then find or make opportunities where we feel safe and train ourselves. That’s one reason why I run Matrix Energetics practise or play groups. At the seminars, the emphasis is on learning, everything is new and not everyone gets the experiences they want. Getting together in a small relaxed group is a great way to combine our energies and intent and explore further down the rabbit hole.
I also had the privilege to spend last weekend experiencing a variety of deep trances with a master of this art form, Michael Perez. Michael induces trance through expert story telling. Although many people lost track of his voice and all outer awareness at times, I was totally enthralled by the stories themselves and retained some outer awareness while also experiencing blissful, relaxed states. The result so far is increased joy in my life. Having been ‘tuned in’, I will continue to deepen and use trances for change with Michael’s CDs. Michael’s blog is due to be relaunched with a new website. meanwhile, there are some interesting posts and podcasts here .
